Unnatural Partners
Video Installation (2005)

This installation is based on a video work. Eyes from a man and woman from the same film, one of whom is artificial, are matched up to create an uncanny pair. The two shown here are Deckard and Rachel from the film Bladerunner.

This suggests binary oppositions such as male/female; human/machine; real/fiction. By placing them in such an ambiguous relationship it is implied that such ‘opposites’ have more in common than is traditionally thought.

Slowed down footage was originally filmed from a screen and the enlargement process further degrades the image. This highlights the technology involved in the construction of images, which draws attention to the bodily, social and psychological machinery that we experience the world through.
