I'm Your Biggest Fan

A series of talks organised by Ana Benlloch and S Mark Gubb during their 2004/2005 Fellowships at BIAD/UCE. This was an opportunity to talk about something the speaker is interested in outside of traditional art. This was then discussed and analysed, both in terms of what it meant to the speaker and in terms of general culture and theory.

Ana Benlloch - Doctor Who

Clips from the show were shown, that featured the 'Autons' (Moving dummies made from living plastic) and the 'Mara' (demonic creatures that possess victims). Areas of discussion included fear of the 'Uncanny' in SF, where the familiar becomes strange and threatening, where something that looks human, or even like a friend, reveals itself to be 'Other'.

S Mark Gubb - Heavy Metal

Tracks from 'The Number of the Beast' by Iron Maiden were played and the links between horror films and metal music discussed. Other topics included the outsider role of the metal fan.

David Thomas - Anime

Clips from Japanese anime films were shown, including 'Akira'. These often feature apocalyptic scenarios, and the connection between this and Japanese history (in particular the atom bombs of WWII) were discussed.

Steven Varndell - Aesthetics of Adverts & New Wave Martial Arts Films

The discussion centred around how some television adverts can seem to be a thing removed from the products they promote. Many have developed complex story lines that grow over several installments. An example is the Three campaign which featured a large jelly fish and some japanese cowboys, a singing cherry that gets eaten, and a girl with oversized hands who goes to see a game being played that is not quite basketball. It doesn't seem surreal, rather it makes a sense we're not privy to.

New Wave Martial Arts movies such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero etc. seem to share something of this aesthetic, and whether this is a positive or negative development in culture was debated.

Elizabeth Short - Angel TV Series

An episode from the cult TV sci-fi program "Angel" (a spin off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) was shown, featuring the main character becoming a "puppet".

Hannah Carlisle - My Father

The speaker talker about her father, his life and achievements. As a contrast to discussions about 'Art' she chose life instead, a life that she admires.
